1. Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson is best known as the 28th president of the United States, but he also was a very impactful lawyer. Although he is a controversial figure and player in the law field, he had a major role in the conclusion of the Treaty of Versailles and was “instrumental” in the formation of the League of Nations, which awarded him the 1919 Nobel Peace Prize.
2. Cicero
Similar to Woodrow Wilson, Cicero is a controversial figure also known for his lawyer skills. He is known not only for spearheading risky cases, but also winning them. During his time as a quaestor, an official who was in charge of public revenue and expenditure, he successfully prosecuted a case against Sicily’s governor, Gaius Verres. After that case, he became known as the greatest public speaker in all of Rome.
3. Johnnie Cochran, Jr.
Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. is well-known for taking high profile and highly publicized police brutality cases within the black community. He even had the chance to represent several famous clients such as Michael Jackson, Sean Combs, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, Riddick Bowe and Todd Bridges, among many others.
4. Elena Kagan
Elena Kagan’s passion for justice started with observing her father, who was an attorney. She then studied at Princeton, Oxford and Harvard. She served on the Clinton Administration for four years and eventually became the first female Dean of Harvard Law School. Judge Kagan now serves as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
5. Shirin Ebadi
Shirin Ebadi is a lawyer known for her human rights activism. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in the realm of democracy and human rights. After earning a law degree, passing qualification exams and pursuing a doctorates degree in law, she became the first woman president of the Tehran city court in 1975.
